My search came to a halt when I realized I couldn't hardly give you the perfect "Tiffany blue" polish without something to base my findings on. I needed a Tiffany box! Well, I finally got one. And a bag. And a baggy. And another baggy:
Actually, I borrowed these from my aunt. I don't have any Tiffany jewelry, nor do I plan to buy any. I guess it isn't my style...
Does anyone else find it odd that the color of the Tiffany packaging is so varied. For being allegedly "copywrited" you would think they'd be more consistent across the board with their color ... I'm sure there is probably someone that would insist "They are all the same". Kind of like OPI's "My Private Jet". Haha.
Here are the polishes I've collected, plus a few I just threw in there for the sake of color comparisons:

ReplyDeletethis cracks me up! i actually bought a few bottles of polish w/ me to the Tiffany store to compare...the SA was a little weird-ed out but came around & helped me, alas tho, no dead on dupes for what i had (ChG FA & essie MCA)

ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Before looking at the titles, looked to be that #3 and #4 worked the best. Nfu-Oh is kind of a hassle to get, so I'll probably stick to the China Glaze. Interesting that you had some obvious green in here. I guess it's the turquoise in the color. I think the OPI ones are way off.

I think it would cost way too much to copyright so many colors!
So they use the same pigment for everything!

Wow this is a great post. I guess all the packagings' colours vary because of the different materials. I could be wrong though. I really like some of the colours you collected, especially China Glaze "Turned up Turquoise".

But the sales assistant couldn't have told me that she's never tried to find a perfect "Tiffany" blue... because I'm sure she has!

SquaredNails- China Glaze is a very close color but I was looking for one that was more accurate. I'm not sure where you are from but Nfu Oh's are easy to order in the States. That's why I have so many! :) As far as the colors that were way off, I mentioned that I included them in there just to show the color comparison :)
Jaljen- Haha! Yah, I need to learn when to stop but just the slightest color variation seems to make a big difference when put on my nails. That's why I keep them all! :)
Sarah B- It seems that using the same pigment on all different materials would be the easy way out. Maybe I'm just too much of a perfectionist but if it was my company, there would be A LOT of test runs and proofing before I approved any of the packaging materials! :)
Tiffany- I do! But I think I've finally come to a conclusion! I'll definitely keep the non-"Tiffany" blues! I love them all! Glad you enjoyed my post :)

Cel- Yah, most likely! About "Turned Up Turquoise"... it is actually very bright! Borderline neon. It just doesn't show in the photographs. I guess it is too bright for my camera.

ReplyDeleteI was talking to a friend about the concept of 'colour copyrighting' the other day... we came to the conclusion that yes, while many companies are known for the main colour of their logos (Tiffany, Cadbury and Coke being the prime examples) it's pretty freaking difficult and stupid to try and copyright a colour.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to find out the official legalese definition, but I'm pretty sure the use of the colour Tiffany blue, as long as you don't call it that, is legal (though frowned upon by the company, haha). It's the name that's copyright - as soon as you describe it as 'Tiffany blue' then you're in trouble, otherwise, there's nothing they can do about it. That being said, the fact you noticed variations in the company's packaging is odd and a little disappointing, what with all the hype about their distinctive 'blue boxes'!

ReplyDeleteGlad you can finally sleep! When I saw your one comment about Tiffany Blue I even thought to myself all my packaging is different so it's hard! The reason I know this is because one of my wedding colors was "Tiffany Blue" although I chose to go with the jewelry bag and it's a much darker hue than say their website or shopping bag. Since you have so many it's good to know you can match any of their packaging *thumbs up*.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the color variation is based on the material used? Sometimes the dye works differently because they react differently to the various ingredients. Either way - a great comparison! That took a lot of work and your pictures are perfect.

ReplyDeleteThe reason for all the differnt "Tiffany" blues, it has to do with the material that it's printed on. And it depends the print being spot colour or it's 4-colour production. Materials like fabric would be quite hard to match. They're usually very close matching.
Everything in Graphic Design we have a standard colour bible to match all universal print colours in by this company called Pantone (a bit like those wall paint swatch book). So, therefore any company logo if you want to get the exact matching colour, you'll need to use this pantone colour ink as a spot colour.
Now my dream would be if only Pantone Colour system will make nail polishes...
or all nail companies provide a swatch book like that...

I got my graphic design degree from Iowa State University but haven't pursued a career in that field yet. Its just too subjective and I hate criticism! :) But I do know all about PANTONE colors! I'm just so surprised Tiffany & Co. doesn't do more adjustments to the inks or dyes to make the colors more consistent throughout the packaging materials... Weird for a company that is known best for its color!

ReplyDeleteJust one question, though: Are you absolutely sure that the first one is TUT? Because mine is immensely dark and bright! It doesn't even belong with the near-tiffany colors I own. Could there be a label mismatching?
Trincess- Yah... Mine is the same way. For some reason I just could NOT get the camera to pick up on the color. I added it to the swatch wheel partially for my own use so when I was in the mood for a blueish-green then I could see them all at once. I should have color corrected it but I was more focused on the Essie "T&C", China Glaze "For Audrey" and Nfu Oh #394 for this post. If I have time, I should probably go back and fix it, huh?

On my monitor, ChG's For Audrey looks like it's the color in between Essie's Turquoise & Caicos and Nfu Oh's #394. T&C leaning green, #394 leaning blue and FA right smack in the middle.
