Closure... finally!

As some of you already know, I have been on a (somewhat) long quest to find an accurate "Tiffany blue" polish. I've bought ALL SORTS of colors and brands. Okay, no... I've stuck to those I feel safe with [OPI, Essie, Nfu Oh, and China Glaze]. But still, I'd like to think that I've expanded my horizons mostly because of this one particular challenge.

My search came to a halt when I realized I couldn't hardly give you the perfect "Tiffany blue" polish without something to base my findings on. I needed a Tiffany box! Well, I finally got one. And a bag. And a baggy. And another baggy:
Actually, I borrowed these from my aunt. I don't have any Tiffany jewelry, nor do I plan to buy any. I guess it isn't my style...

Does anyone else find it odd that the color of the Tiffany packaging is so varied. For being allegedly "copywrited" you would think they'd be more consistent across the board with their color ... I'm sure there is probably someone that would insist "They are all the same". Kind of like OPI's "My Private Jet". Haha.

Here are the polishes I've collected, plus a few I just threw in there for the sake of color comparisons:
I don't really have time to swatch these all individually for this post so here they are on a nail wheel. I think this works better anyways. You get to see them side-by-side!
I suppose you want to know what they are...
1- China Glaze "Turned Up Turquoise" (Neon. Doesn't show in photo.)
2- Nfu Oh #206
3- Essie "Turquoise & Caicos"
4- China Glaze "For Audrey"
5- Nfu Oh #394
6- Nfu Oh #172
7- Essie "Mint Candy Apple"
8- OPI "Hey Get In Lime"
9- OPI "Damone Roberts 1968"

Ready to see the results?

Nfu Oh #394 matches best with the box. It needs a touch of white to lighten it up but otherwise the color and hue are almost perfect!

How about that strangely green-ish bag?
Essie "Turquoise & Caicos" matches it to a "T". It is exactly the same color.

Below is a look at the colors side-by-side with a white background and also with a black one. Hope you enjoyed my post! I can finally sleep in peace!

  1. This post is great. I've been wanting a dupe for this colour for ages! I never realised the bags and boxes were different colours! xx

  2. this cracks me up! i actually bought a few bottles of polish w/ me to the Tiffany store to compare...the SA was a little weird-ed out but came around & helped me, alas tho, no dead on dupes for what i had (ChG FA & essie MCA)

  3. What a great post! Love it :) and your blog.

  4. Very interesting. Before looking at the titles, looked to be that #3 and #4 worked the best. Nfu-Oh is kind of a hassle to get, so I'll probably stick to the China Glaze. Interesting that you had some obvious green in here. I guess it's the turquoise in the color. I think the OPI ones are way off.

  5. This is where I know I'm not a proper nail blogger. 2 of those would be enough for me. If I found I had such a bunch of similar-ish polishes I'd be swapping them.

  6. Heheh!

    Yay for you!
But you know, it might be the same pigment, and it reacts differently in different materials!
I think it would cost way too much to copyright so many colors!
So they use the same pigment for everything!

  7. I'd say you have a 'match Tiffany' OCD!!! ;)
This is one of the coolest posts I've read in a while. I love how many 'Tiffany' colors you have. And it's quite nice to know which one pulls off the color best.

What will you do with the ones that were disqualified?

  8. The best post ever!!!
    Thanks for this awesome comparision!

  9. Wow this is a great post. I guess all the packagings' colours vary because of the different materials. I could be wrong though. I really like some of the colours you collected, especially China Glaze "Turned up Turquoise".

  10. Wow, I still really want that Essie T&C! So gorgeous!

  11. Olivia- I didn't realize it either! Such a shame, especially for a company known for its color. I'd definitely get a bottle of #394 since you've been looking for a good "Tiffany" blue!

LisaInFL- Nope, they sure aren't! That's why I've been searching for a better polish... LOL I would have felt so awkward in the store trying to match a color! Too funny! But the sales assistant couldn't have told me that she's never tried to find a perfect "Tiffany" blue... because I'm sure she has!

AllYouDesire- Aww thanks so much! :)

SquaredNails- China Glaze is a very close color but I was looking for one that was more accurate. I'm not sure where you are from but Nfu Oh's are easy to order in the States. That's why I have so many! :) As far as the colors that were way off, I mentioned that I included them in there just to show the color comparison :)

Jaljen- Haha! Yah, I need to learn when to stop but just the slightest color variation seems to make a big difference when put on my nails. That's why I keep them all! :)

Sarah B- It seems that using the same pigment on all different materials would be the easy way out. Maybe I'm just too much of a perfectionist but if it was my company, there would be A LOT of test runs and proofing before I approved any of the packaging materials! :)

Tiffany- I do! But I think I've finally come to a conclusion! I'll definitely keep the non-"Tiffany" blues! I love them all! Glad you enjoyed my post :)

Helene- Thank you! :) I'm glad you liked it!

Cel- Yah, most likely! About "Turned Up Turquoise"... it is actually very bright! Borderline neon. It just doesn't show in the photographs. I guess it is too bright for my camera.

Adorepink- Yes it is so pretty! I still need to wear it though! I've got so much polish that I forget about them sometimes!

  12. Haha, I love this! I was wondering when you would find the perfect Tiffany blue... good job Sissy!

  13. I was talking to a friend about the concept of 'colour copyrighting' the other day... we came to the conclusion that yes, while many companies are known for the main colour of their logos (Tiffany, Cadbury and Coke being the prime examples) it's pretty freaking difficult and stupid to try and copyright a colour.

I haven't been able to find out the official legalese definition, but I'm pretty sure the use of the colour Tiffany blue, as long as you don't call it that, is legal (though frowned upon by the company, haha). It's the name that's copyright - as soon as you describe it as 'Tiffany blue' then you're in trouble, otherwise, there's nothing they can do about it. That being said, the fact you noticed variations in the company's packaging is odd and a little disappointing, what with all the hype about their distinctive 'blue boxes'!

  14. haha, awesome post! thanks for the comparison! :)

  15. Aweseome job, thanks for this! Still don't have For Audrey in my stash, but just got Essie T&C. Wondering if I still NEED For Audrey?

  17. What a beautiful post! Thanks!

  18. Glad you can finally sleep! When I saw your one comment about Tiffany Blue I even thought to myself all my packaging is different so it's hard! The reason I know this is because one of my wedding colors was "Tiffany Blue" although I chose to go with the jewelry bag and it's a much darker hue than say their website or shopping bag. Since you have so many it's good to know you can match any of their packaging *thumbs up*.

  19. Maybe the color variation is based on the material used? Sometimes the dye works differently because they react differently to the various ingredients. Either way - a great comparison! That took a lot of work and your pictures are perfect.

  20. I love the colour! I think I'm going to buy it

  21. mlk- Thanks! I'm glad I got it figured out! I was going to bring all my stuff up to your place to compare but I forgot so then I got the Tiffany bag/box from Jennifer!

Jade- I know! I was really surprised when I saw they were pretty much ALL DIFFERENT!

Katrina- Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Penelope- I say "go for it"! Those 2 colors are very different in my opinion. "Turquoise & Caicos" is much more green. "For Audrey" is more blue and a little dusty (grayish).

    Liene- Thanks!

    Sonidlo- Thank you :)

Freshie- LOL :) Glad to know that it wasn't just the packaging materials that I had that were different colors! So basically, there really is no "Tiffany" blue. More like "Tiffany" BLUES! :)

Megan- I'm sure that has a lot to do with it... but I'm really surprised that they don't have more consistency since their brand is basically known for its color. (not colorS!)Glad you liked the post!!

    Becky- :) Me too! Obviously!

  22. This is a great post!! I'm such a colour geek!

The reason for all the differnt "Tiffany" blues, it has to do with the material that it's printed on. And it depends the print being spot colour or it's 4-colour production. Materials like fabric would be quite hard to match. They're usually very close matching.

Everything in Graphic Design we have a standard colour bible to match all universal print colours in by this company called Pantone (a bit like those wall paint swatch book). So, therefore any company logo if you want to get the exact matching colour, you'll need to use this pantone colour ink as a spot colour.

Now my dream would be if only Pantone Colour system will make nail polishes...

or all nail companies provide a swatch book like that...

    Hmmmm... just a thought!

  23. Thanks for this! I think I'll be adding Nfu Oh 394 to my lemmings!

  24. Thanks for posting this. I just think the Tiffany color is so gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.

  25. hahaha your Symtoms page...I adore that page! How do you came up with that idea? It's so funny...and true! :)

  26. Stylishly Yours- You're a graphic designer too? Well, actually I don't consider myself one. I got my graphic design degree from Iowa State University but haven't pursued a career in that field yet. Its just too subjective and I hate criticism! :) But I do know all about PANTONE colors! I'm just so surprised Tiffany & Co. doesn't do more adjustments to the inks or dyes to make the colors more consistent throughout the packaging materials... Weird for a company that is known best for its color!

Cara- Thanks for stopping by! Glad you liked the post. #394 is perfect! :)

  27. Nails 4 Stars- Thanks! I came up with the idea for the symptoms page after I created my blog name "Polish Hoarder Disorder"... If you have the symptoms, then you have a PHD! :)

  31. Oh this is awesome! I'm so glad you did it with the bag and the box; to me that's the perfect way to find it! Great comparison post :)

  32. this post is so great and very enlightening! I adore all those colors together.
Just one question, though: Are you absolutely sure that the first one is TUT? Because mine is immensely dark and bright! It doesn't even belong with the near-tiffany colors I own. Could there be a label mismatching?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Trincess- Yah... Mine is the same way. For some reason I just could NOT get the camera to pick up on the color. I added it to the swatch wheel partially for my own use so when I was in the mood for a blueish-green then I could see them all at once. I should have color corrected it but I was more focused on the Essie "T&C", China Glaze "For Audrey" and Nfu Oh #394 for this post. If I have time, I should probably go back and fix it, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love every single one of those colors, quite the collection!

  35. oh, no problem! I'm relieved that mine is not faulty and that I'm not missing out on another beautiful aqua =)

  36. Thanks for doing this post! I, too, have been looking for a Tiffany blue dupe and had no idea the "real" Tiffany blue varied so much.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow! I thought For Audrey was the perfect tiffany blue! Welll I am suprised at Turquoise & Caicos...its soo green! Really nice post!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Tasha- Yep. It's like a darker version of Mint Candy Apple... kinda :)

  39. Adore Tiffany Blue. Thanks for doing this :)

  40. Thanks taking so much effort to find the perfect Tiffany blue! You've certainly gotten me hooked on getting the color too! On my monitor, ChG's For Audrey looks like it's the color in between Essie's Turquoise & Caicos and Nfu Oh's #394. T&C leaning green, #394 leaning blue and FA right smack in the middle.

  41. Love it! :) I have "For Audrey" on my digits now .. it's one of my favorite "go-to" colors. I need to get "Mint Candy Apple" by Essie. It's gorgeous. Anyone want to swap? :) No, seriously .. email me, if ya do. kelliealtieri AT gmail DOT com
