Challenge (Analogous Color)

This week's challenge is not about creating a themed manicure. Rather, it is about what you can do with color. For this challenge, I want you to create an analogous nail design with the colors of your choice. Here are the specifics:
Let me reiterate. The challenge is for you to use only 3 neighboring colors from the color wheel. Do NOT USE BLACK OR WHITE (as you can see, they are not on the color wheel). You are welcome to do as much stamping as you'd like but stick to your color scheme.

An example of an analogous color scheme is shown in the photo above of the colored pencils. As you can see, they are yellow, yellow-green, and green pencils. Now look below on the color wheel. Those colors are all in a row:
So for this week's challenge, choose 3 side-by-side (-by-side) colors as your kick-off point. Then create from there! I believe this will be more challenging but also a good way to start thinking a little differently when it comes to creating nail art. Have fun! P.S. I understand that some of you may not have a hoarding problem such as mine, thus do not have every color of the rainbow in nail polish... I will be fine with you leaving out the tertiary colors (red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-purple, red-purple). However, primary (red, yellow, blue) and secondary colors (orange, green, purple) are a must in this challenge. If you have any questions about your color choice, send me an email. I'll try to respond as soon as possible :)

Send me your "Analogous" nail designs by Friday (6-18-10) at midnight (CST) to polishhoarder@gmail.com! Don't forget to add a link to your blog if you would like me to include it with your entry!

Preferred file size: 7" WIDE x 5.25" TALL @ 72 dpi

If you do not know how to crop and resize your image, let me know and I will gladly do it for you! It is better that I get a photo too large so I can minimize it to the size I need, rather than a photo too small. Photos that are smaller than the size I request will lose a lot of detail and become fuzzy when I enlarge them!

  2. What is the name of the blue-green opi colour? It looks gorgous!

  3. Megan- Glad you think it will be fun! :)

Anonymous- That blue-green color is actually "Jade is the New Black"... I think it is more green in real-life though.

  5. This sounds like fun (even though I can't see the pics at work ... I think Photobucket is blocked). I'm really going to try to find time to participate this week =)

  6. Ok, I am going to do this for my next mani! (really, this time lol) I've been wanting to do some analogous nail art, but didn't really know where I wanted to start. This will make me just go for it!

  7. vegesauras- Hmmm? That's a good question since they would all be in the same color range. However, I really wanted everyone to use just 3 colors so everyone would have the same restrictions for the challenge... so I'm going to say just pick your favorite 3 of the 5 polishes :)

  8. Colette- Oh no! The photos are my favorite part of my post! I hope you will be able to see them later and I hope you'll be able to join this week! :)

  9. Sarah- Awesome! That's really what you have to do... "Just go for it"!

  10. Omg...this is so exciting for someone who has an almost obsessive-compulsive behavior with color names/wheels...

    great idea!

  12. ooh its funny that you should say it's jade is the new black cause i totally have that but it looks so different here :)

  13. Anonymous- Yah, I couldn't do too much color correction because it would affect other colors... but all I care is that it looked like a blue-green in the photo and it does! :)

  14. aarrgghh, its already driving me crazy ! LOL trying to stamp colours that are so close together is hard, they just don't show up enough. OOooooh, you challenge us so hard, Miss PHD ;o)

  15. BabyD- Yikes! I didn't even think about that! This really IS going to be a challenge! :)

  16. Ooo, the pics are the best, I love that OPI color wheel =)

  17. I must say, you got me mind boggled! I'm going to think and sketch out ideas. Hopefully I come up with something worth showing. haha.

  18. Milan and Vanaily- Gosh, now I'm getting scared about what I'm going to do! LOL... maybe just try a different idea on each nail to see what you like best! I sure hope you figure out something that you would want to send me! Let's hope I'm not the only one that completes this challenge! Don't give up :)

  19. Well, I might have to give up on this one Hun, I just can't get the colours to look different on a base. Tried a few combos, but it still looks like two colours instead of three. Will keep trying as I love doing this, but if I don't enter, I still love you, just have some rubbish polishes LOL ;o)

  20. You have to tell us what colours those OPI, they look so gorgeous arranged like that!

    ReplyDelete
  21. BabyD- Don't give up! What color combination are you using? Try the lightest color as the base color and stamp with darker colors on top. If you still can't get it to work, try a different analogous scheme. Blues and purples seem like they would be harder to work with...

Charlotte- I'm not going to label the OPI's because they are not color corrected. Some of them actually look very different in real life! :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, I did do the lightest as a base, tried yellow(Base)/yellow-green/green, no luck, then blue/blue-green/green (Base) still no go......I am trying to keep them all as strong shades, like Mid tones, as I felt this was true to the challenge. Would be far easier with pastels or a mix of pastel and bold.....but trying to stick to rules :o)
No worries, I will sit back and admire everyone elses fabulous creations ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. BabyD- Well, it might just be my "fabulous creations" that you'll be checking out! I haven't gotten any entries yet... I am going to post an early idea to get people motivated. I'm excited... I've got it all planned out! :) If you can't get it done with all midtones, I'm allowing you to use pastels or whatever will work if you decide you want to give it another try :)

  24. You won't be alone! I am totally planning on doing mine tonight, I think this is a great theme for a more subtle marble. Was actually going to do it last night but my friend I hadn't seen in like 2 months stopped by so I was sidetracked LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Colette- Oh that's just what I needed to hear. I was sincerely concerned that I'd be the only one doing the challenge and that's just because it is MY challenge... I'm glad you are thinking of doing a marble! I was actually thinking of different ways to do this challenge and marbling was one of them!... but we all know that I won't be the one to do it so I'm glad people will get to see yours!

    ReplyDelete
  26. looking forward to seeing the marbling, I can't do that, way too clever for me LOL Im just a cheating Konad girl at heart ;o)
Will see what else I can come up with, won't resort to pastels. Even my Hubby is trying to help ROFL now you know how bad its getting, bless him ;o)

  27. This challenge is so much harder than it sounds LOL ... all the polish I have I thought it would be a snap but I had a hell of a time & ended up totally changing my color scheme. I finally found 3 that went together & also worked together in the water but by that point it was too late to do the actual mani ... good thing I have until Friday LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Colette- I know! This is much harder than I imagined! Whoops! Next time I might have to test out the challenge before I post it... I did get a set of analogous nails done but I don't like them at all. :( I'll probably post them this afternoon. I really hope your new color scheme works out!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've considered trying this out as I never user more then one colour, but my nail polish stash is rather slim at the moment and I don't think I have 3 analogous colours, lol. Maybe next time. :)

  30. can you use gold.. as a yellow.. I have some glitter golds. some of them are very yellowish?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pretty- I would prefer that you use an actual yellow polish :)
